Material Landscape
- They are tangible
- They are concrete, those which you can see and feel
- Can be temporary or permanent
Symbolic (Immaterial) Landscape
- They exist in the mind, part of social imagination
- They comprise images that represent a “shared set of ideas and memories and feelings that bind people together” (Meinig, 1979: 164)
- They contain meanings which are inseparable from the consciousness of those who inhabit it. E.g. Holland Village, what do the houses symbolise?
